Wrap Then in Love

World Wide Quilting Bee--Day 2

Welcome to a fantastic weekend of quilting for Wrap Them in Love. This is a great way to kick off our year and start on our way to providing 2000 children with quilts in the year 2000!

The day starts out with a note from Ulrika in Sweden:

Got started late today, at noon. Things got in the way, but now I'm sewing! Working on a cat applique top and a heart top. I'm going to try and make these bigger than the other ones. DH is wonderful, he says to me to just sew and he will take care of everything else. :-) The sun is shining outside, it's about -10 C/14 F.

And then another note with a picture from Ulrika:

It's now 4 p.m. here (9 a.m. in Chicago) and I am working on the top with appliqued cats. It's a fun one, but takes a lot of time. It's getting dark outside and it's now -15 C/5 F. DH's cousin is coming over later, and we'll have some enchiladas. Yummy! I've got VH1 playing in the background, this weekend they're playing music from the 80's. That's fun, since that's the music I listened to a lot when I was young.... ROTFL I love the photos from the Bama Belles Bee, you look like you are having so much fun!! :-)
Keep up the great work everyone!

A note has just arrived from Suzie in England!

Hi Ladies
well I am back from my travels and I have a friend here with me called Amanda...she is not usually a quilter but she is here to help make some quilt tops for the babies this weekend....also Heidi who is my stepdaughter, she is 9 and working on her first 9 patch quilt top for the babies, Amanda is working away on a rainy day satisfaction top...I am cutting and pressing! we are ready to make at least 3 or 4 tops today!! how is everyone else doing??
love & hugs Suzie in England

Ulrika in Sweden is still working hard!

It's 7 p.m. here and noon in Chicago. Weird isn't it? :-) I just finished a top made of 9patches. Needed a break from those cats. I will only make tops, not finished quilts. To send finished quilts to the USA would cost a lot, I'd rather send along that money with the tops, to be used for batting and backing. It is so much fun reading what everyone's doing. It's fascinating what we can do when we put our minds to it, isn't it?

a note from Karen

Karen here checking in -
Thursday night I cut out a Rainy Day Satisfaction. Last night I got the sides on all the blocks, but had to stop and give a good friend a perm - wanted to say no, but can't do that to her. This morning the Rainy Day got finished and I've put borders on a scrappy pinwheel that MaryAnn and Lynda put together last weekend. Of course, having to deal with a bunch of other stuff - laundry - nutrition - and personal hygiene to name a few.
Found a yard of three different blues in my stash - a light, a medium, and a dark and am off to play with my triangle paper and see what I come up with.
Want to get one more top done and then start sandwiching and quilting. May have to make a run for backing fabric. I bought five cheater panels at MaryJo's, and will have 5 other tops to quilt. Also have one I brought back from Charlotte that was already quilted - just need a label on it and the one I'm appliquing the hearts to. So hopefully at the end of the month I'll have at least 12 to put in mail.
So wish I was with the Bama Belles - it's sunny and cold here now but weather is to deteriorate by end of day. Saw on news that northern Alabama was getting sleet - hopefully our BBB's are so hot and bothered burning up their machines that they don't even notice!
Lots of hugs and love - a lonely Karen who misses her Carolina Girls but is having fun all by herself stitching away.

It's hard to get the posts in order with so many different time zones. I have been so busy today with sewing quilts and running the store that this is the first chance I have had to get the webpage caught up. There is a HUGE pile of pictures and e-mails to go thru, so I'm sure that you will all have a great time checking out everyone's quilts. It is a great way to get more ideas for quick quilts to make.

So---here we go with the days activities!!! I'm sure that everyone had as much fun as I did!

Ulrika finally got a picture of her shy hubby to share with us:

It's 9:15 p.m. here and we've just finished a late dinner. I am stuffed! DH and his cousin had made som really yummy enchiladas. I am slow tonight, I have only gotten 1 top made so far. I'm working on number two now, the one with the cats.
So, our fuses are safe... LOL

Our Texas group send a note. It sounds like they are having a great time. Those cinnamon rolls sounds soooo good!!

This morning we had 2 more ladies join us. Jena from Sweetwater and Fern who is a friend of Marie's from here in Baird. We are now on a "fresh out of the oven" cinnamon roll break right now. Our total for the weekend so far is 3 completed quilts, 8 tops, and more in the works. We are having such fun!!! It's been great getting to know each other and working on this mutual project. We have already set a date for our next sewfest - isn't this great??? Maybe you other Texans that couldn't come this time can come to the next one.
Gonna go eat my cinnamon roll now - aren't you jealous???

Hi All-
Its almost 4pm, sent Ellen 7 pics of finished tops by me, Carolyn, Diane and Kathryn.
Carolyn is finishing up a rail fence, done in a day. Diane is cutting her little heart out ( very bad pun), and Kathryn is sewing a border for me and I am cooking, food not quilts, Its the italian in me, must feed people.

Thats all for now

Me on the left, Carolyn in the center, Diane on the right. Carolyn just finished her third quilt in a day!!!

These ladies are so modest! I think the quilts are beautiful, and I am amazed at how many they have done so far!

A final note from Texas. Ladies, please send e-mails and pictures the next time you get together. It does sound beautiful there! Thank you for all of your hard work. I can't wait to see the quilts in person when they arrive here!

Hi,
We have stopped for the weekend. We have 3 completed & 10 tops, total of 13 to send to Ellen. We had a great time, Marie is a great cook, her husband did magic tricks for a little while, & the quiet out here is wonderful. We plan to meet again on March 3rd & 4th. Jena dyed some FQs yesterday and brought each of us one. They were so pretty. Hugs to all of you, Marie, Ginger, Jena, Fern, & Ida

another quilter checking in:

hi all!
enter one more top for the talley. i finished a top that was cut for me last weekend by kathryn's friend, holly. It is blue and yellow 1/2 square triangles made into 6 humongo diamonds. I also added a snazzy plaid 5" border. i think i'll stick to one border--it is pretty much big now-bigger than a crib and smaller than a twin. anyway, what do i need to do to it to send to someone to quilt and bind. I haven't learned how to do that part yet.
thanks all and have a good night(or morning),
hugs

ALABAMA!!

Hi everyone, This is Linda J at Joy's addy. We stayed up till about midnight sewing last night. Betsy thought she had one more border to add before she turned in but when she discovered it was two--then off to bed. She has her's finished; Betsy was supposed to go to Alanta this morning for a family event but the weather forecast for sleet/freezing rain put a end to that so she is working on a red single Irish chain now. (We are using a lot of that quilt fuse and it is making much faster work of this!!!)
I just finished sewing the 49 block patches for a triple Irish Chain--Shannon helped me with the Alternate blocks and is sewing them together. We almost got that one done! I may start on a 3D bowtie or a square in the square here in a minute.
Joy is almost done with a Dots and Dashes quilt but Helen her granddaughter is sewing a rail fence quilt that she designed and made blocks for. Now Joy is back cutting so we can keep rolling--another rail fence.
Marty is working on a green single Irish chain and has a good start on it. We are expecting Betsy 2 back in a bit so she had finish up a Rail fence she was working on yesterday.
Not sure at all what that brings our total to I think I counted 27 tops so far. Yahoo!
Joy's DIL is keeping us in food and is starting a big pot of chili for tonight and a grocery store run means ice cream sundaes tonight for that chocolate fix.
Joy and I talked to Becky this morning as some the rest of you may have too. Stupid me did even think to get Shannon to the phone, I was so excited to talk to her.
Thankfully the electricity is staying on today---we blew 4 fuses yesterday with all the irons, revved up machines and all. Even had to call in the Power Company to come check things out. What fun, y'all. Well, we should have some more pics before long at this rate.
Back to "work" and love to all,
Linda J

As Linda runs back to her machine she says for me to tell the group that we will give a count tonight when we head to bed. Last night she and I turned in after l2 and naturally we were the last to bed. It may be the same tonight, so it may be late before we give a figure, but I don't think that Linda made an mistake about our figure last night, but when we give you the update tonight the truth will out. What fun we are having!!! Wish we could all be together to do this but I doubt that we would get as much done, there is so much fun to be had when quilters get together.
And the BBB's have also made a date for another session in March. We will probably choose to do it on the same week-end that is already planned by another group - that date being March 3, 4 and 5. We plan to have all tops that we finish this week-end to Ellen before that date with them all quilted and ready for her to send to "wrap them in love". Marti said that we will "throw down the gauntlet" and challenge any of you to beat the BBB's. Sounds like fightin' words to me.
Ellen, we received the brochures and labels today - just in the nick of time. The BBB's have already had a signing party. Thank you!!!!
Til later tonight. I need to get at least one quilt finished this week-end, and if I don't hurry to a machine I won't get that done. I have spent my time keeping 7 people busy by keeping kits cut and ready for sewing. Jane kept busy at the ironing board and Lisa (my DIL) kept the food and drinks to people at the sewing machines.

an excited note from Maggie in Maine!

Hey everyone,
Maggie here with exciting news. (for me at least) I am 3/4 finished with my first top for WTIL! I know, big deal but I'm so glad to be finally able to get something done!
I hope to finish it tonight then tomorrow after church, I'll start the next one. I'm so excited. Told dh & ds that they can spend tomorrow afternoon watching football and I will be in the sewing room!!
Break is over, back to the machine...later.
Hugs,
Maggie

Another note from Maggie after a talk with the Florida quilters:

Hi everyone, Shouldn't be taking another break so soon but I had to let you know that I just talked with the Florida gang and they are having waaay too much fun. So their count they tell me is 102 quilts. They are pulling people in off of the streets I hear to help cut fabric, and if they say no, they are chasing them down the street with a crazed look, wielding scissors and shrieking at them"we'll feed you, if you help, its for charity..." I hear Muriel made poor Sue walk up and down in front of the supermarket with a sign reading, "please help us beat the Carolina girls by quilting with us!!" What's that you say? You don't believe me?? Heh Heh Heh.......
Then there is their BIG secret, but you'll not hear it from these lips...
Hugs,
Maggie

Welcome to Pru from Tennessee! I'm so glad that you've joined in, Pru

Hello from Tennessee.
I'm alone here and moving kind of slow, but listening to music helps a lot! Right now I'm Riding with Bob Wills via Asleep at the Wheel, etc. and making a very LOUD baby quilt. Was relieved to see the note from FL re "colorful" borders. Folks, the baby who gets this one will need to keep her sunglasses on, and I'm not just talking borders. gg Maybe I'll put on an old Louis Prima record and really swing. Thanks for the encouraging notes on this site. I'm neon pink on a rainy Memphis day,
Pru

Hilary (from Dallas, Texas) just sent pictures of her quilts! These are all quilted and just waiting for bindings. She said she has one more to quilt and will get the bindings on all of them tomorrow. GO HILARY!!!!!

a "goodnight" note from a very tired Florida group:

Let's see,,,,,,we had 5 machines, 3 irons, 2 cutting stations and a "Border Lady" going here all day....with a short (Muriel was giving us more than our 15 alloted minutes) trip to Once Upon a Quilt shop, where we were treated very nicely. We had 3 deserters leave us already.....Marty (she will be back tomorrow), our fearless Border Lady and Janet her cohort in buying out quiltshops....you gotta hear that story....have all left for the night.....Sue S has DEMANDED that we leave her bedroom within 5 minutes (but we don't want to).....Susie is telling us that we have a bed time....Muriel is once again laying on the bed, trying to keep her eyes open....We are still working on Karen...she will cave and stay the night.... At last count we had 163 quilts....ooops....(Karen has a creative way of adding 2+2=163) actually we have more than 20 but less than 163....but no one can see straight nor can they count past 20....we keep seeing double, or triple which ever the case maybe...depending on if you ate Turkey or Ham.....oh, back to the count....oh just forget the count...... Hey...I have a question....did all of the hostesses remember to get extra TP???? it is just a question...I am taking a survey and need the information ASAP... Did you all have a good day? It was so warm and dry here (did you catch that Cher???). The sun was out and we were in.... For now we are headed to la la land....and restore our tired aching bodies....so that tomorrow we can get up zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Karen, Susie, Sue, *¿*, Muriel

Alabama's last note for the day:

Shannon had to leave us this afternoon due to the possibility of freezing rain but she is home safely after a 4 1/2 hour drive. She is a fast stitcher and was a great help to me in getting my tops done, especially that Triple Irish Chain. That was an experiment that didn't quite work and I inadverently made more much work for the poor girl. Such a sweetie and I am so glad that Joy and I had the opportunity to meet her. She may bring her DH next time so he can go antiquing, play golf with my DH--that should be fun.
Joy finally got her first top done but she has been busy cutting borders and binding so we can complete these things. I finished my bowtie quilt about the same time she finished up with her Dots and Dashes. We are going to turn in soon and expect some helpers in the sewing department tomorrow afternoon, weather permitting, and will sew more on Monday when Joy's quilt group meets here.
So the count is---
21 quilts and/or tops before the bee started ( I think a couple got counted twice in error)
14 completed tops
16 projects in the works (in various stages of completion)
for 51---and the weekend is not over!!
We will have more pictures to post tomorrow when a few more borders are added so stay tuned.
I better get off here before I start typing with my nose.
Linda J in AL

...and on the west coast, California signs off for the night:

Nite All- I'm off to bed, its 2am. I finished the quilt top I was working on when Carolyn left and have almost completed another, it just needs some borders. Need to make a correction on the site, Carolyns Quilts are the second and third ones in the long row if pics, sorry for the confusion, but I did have some trouble keeping track of what I was sending. Tomorrow my friend Andrea will be coming and Deborah too if she is feeling better, Carolyn might be back once she realizes just how much she left here today :}
See ya in the morning
Sid
