June 2000 Block of the Month
Butterfly

June’s selection is a block called Butterfly and is attributed to Nancy Cabot in Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns compiled by Barbara Brackman #1654. Alternate names are Richmond by Hearth and Home, Aunt Vina’s Favorite by Aunt Martha, Pin Wheel by the Kansas City Star in 1930 and Lucy’s Four and Nine by Meeker.

As with the other blocks we have done so far it is planned to be a 12- inch finished block based on a three by 3 grid. Feel free to draft it to whatever size you choose. The center of the block is cut 4 ½ inches square or 4 inch finished. The larger half square triangles are cut 4 7/8ths inches or you may wish to use your favorite method for obtaining a four inch finished triangle—Thangles or foundation pieced method, using an EZ triangle ruler and 4 ½ inch strips, grid method or templates. The small squares in the four patches on point are cut 1 7/8ths or 1 3/8ths inch finished by my and the small triangles are 2-inch finished (see notes above for HST’s)

Till next month then! If you have been following along, you are half done with your sampler quilt for Wrap them in Love.
